My 5 top black movie list on Netflix
You could already tell by the title I’m going to be introducing my top five favorite black movies on Netflix. So grateful that Netflix is starting to show more love to the black and urban communities. No shade to any other racists but I’m tired of not seeing enough of my people. Not hearing our stories and voices on the screen. What better time it is then right now to chill at home snuggle under your favorite throw blanket, watch some great movies with one of our favorite snacks.
All Day And A Night - This film really hit home for me. Especially since it takes place in Oakland, California. Oakland has always been second home to me spending my weekends with my father. But it wasn’t until I was an adult I got to experience Oakland. So it was just a goosebump feeling watching this movie. An inspiring rapper chasing his dreams and trying to survive the East Oakland streets at the same time. The peer pressure, the drugs, the mother that doesn’t really pay attention. This movie is number one not just because it took place in Oakland. But the writer and director really were able to capture Oaklands reality. Jahkor the lead character struggles from a kid with the violence and drugs of the streets of Oakland. The older he gets the worst the violence gets. Charged with murder the price he’s forced to pay. All in attempt to take care of his family. Like isn’t so sad that our black men feel they have to result to violence or crimes just to provide for their families. However I highly recommend this movie it gives you a real inside of what’s really going on inside of a young black mans mind.
2. Kings- Now I really love this movie. Not just because Hallie Berry is in it either I love her and everyone knows as a kid I definitely looked up to her and thought I was going to be the next Hallie Berry. Fact I just knew it. This movie takes place in 1992 in Los Angeles, California. A foster mother raising up boys and young men during the Rodney King and Latasha riots. I was just about thought of when all this took place. But to see the madness I was born into. Its all starting to make sense. This film shows how blacks are constantly harassed by LA police and how authority was taken advantage of. The racial profiling of LA police caused everyone to look at blacks as threat. This film shows the pain in our young black men and women. It shows a loving black struggling single mother raising her young black men in streets they are not protected in. Its a really deep powerful movie and I recommend it especially if your not to familiar about the riots in 1991.
3. The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind- I love that this movie was actually a true story a young man in a Malawaian village saves his village by building a wind turbine. Only 13 years old but so driven and destined. I love how he dedicated his time to helping not only his family but his village. His family struggle to pay for a good education for him, even food came hard to get. That didn’t stop his yearning to learn and do better for his family. This young man made a way for himself. The writer and director did a great job by creating his story. I really was able to connect with the characters of the movie. This is good movie to watch especially if its one of those family nights with the kids.
4. Miss Virginia- Is another good film. This woman really fought for a better education for her son her will is inspiring. She wouldn't take no for answer. I related a lot to what her son was going through. Public schools just don't offer the best education for children especially kids of color. I recommend this movie for a good family night.
5. The Forty Year Old Version- This movie was so funny its also a new movie on Netflix. This woman is not only a great comedian she’s also a amazing writer. As a inspiring writer her movie was very motivating not only for me but any writer who watches this movie. A playwriter turned rapper. Check it out yo laugh and cry.
